Welcome and thank you for choosing to apply for the Sedona Dance Festival, the annual celebration of dance in the stunning backdrop of Sedona! This event promises not only a platform for your dance works but also a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of Sedona.

The Sedona Dance Project boast a supportive dance community and a track record of sold-out performances. This festival provides an exceptional chance for your work to be seen by fresh and appreciative eyes. If selected your work will be showcased in 1 evening show, May 3, 2025 with tech rehearsal either May 2 or May 3. 

A small stipend will be provided for each choreographer.

Dance Festival Concept
The Spring Dance Festival will celebrate the human experience, exploring the emotional depth of inner journeys while embracing the radiant power of transformation, healing, and joy. The festival will feature dance works that reflect the full spectrum of human emotions—moments of introspection and struggle, the emergence of light, and the celebration of growth and renewal.

This thematic journey will showcase the interplay of shadows and light, emphasizing that both are essential to growth and understanding. Each performance will contribute to an overarching narrative of healing, personal insight, and joyful transformation.

All works presented at the festival will be appropriate for audiences of all ages and free of political themes, fostering an atmosphere of internal introspection and personal growth. This intentional focus will ensure the festival remains a welcoming and uplifting space for everyone to experience the beauty of dance and the human spirit.

Application Process

To apply for the dance festival, follow these simple steps:

  1. Pay Application Fee:

    • Pay a non-refundable application fee of $25. This fee helps support the administrative costs associated with processing applications.

  2. Application Submission:

    • Fill out the application form completely and accurately. The deadline for application submission is February 25th. Ensure all required information is provided, including personal details and details about the dance piece you intend to submit.

  3. Video Submission:

    • Submit a video of your dance piece. This can be either a rehearsal or performance footage. Preferred platforms for video submissions are Vimeo, Dropbox, or YouTube.

    • Include a link to the video in your application. Make sure the video is accessible, and the link remains active until the evaluation process is complete.

Please note that the application fee is a standard part of the process and helps support the event. The video submission allows the organizers to assess the quality and content of your dance piece. Ensure that you meet the application deadline and provide all necessary information to be considered for inclusion in the festival. Best of luck with your application!

Curation Process

The curation process for submission acceptance involves a thorough evaluation of dance pieces to ensure a cohesive and engaging program for the dance festival. Here are some aspects typically considered during the curation process:

  1. Artistic Quality: Submissions are assessed for their artistic merit, creativity, and innovation. The organizers look for unique and compelling choreography that contributes to the overall diversity and quality of the festival.

  2. Relevance to Theme or Concept: If the dance festival has a specific theme or concept, submissions are evaluated based on how well they align with or contribute to the overarching theme. This helps create a cohesive narrative or experience for the audience.

  3. Variety and Diversity: Organizers aim to present a diverse range of dance styles, genres, and themes to cater to a broad audience. Submissions are selected to ensure a balanced and varied program that captivates and engages viewers.

  4. Technical Proficiency: The technical execution of the dance piece is crucial. Submissions are assessed for the dancers' skill level, precision, and overall technical proficiency to ensure a high-quality presentation.

  5. Suitability for the Festival Format: Considering the time constraints and scheduling, organizers look for submissions that fit well within the designated time frame (in this case, under 8 minutes) and can seamlessly integrate into the show.

  6. Originality and Uniqueness: Preference may be given to dance pieces that bring a fresh and original perspective to the festival. Submissions that stand out for their uniqueness and distinctiveness are often favored.

  7. Audience Engagement: The potential impact on the audience is considered. Organizers aim to select performances that will resonate with and captivate the festival attendees, creating a memorable experience.

  8. Logistical Feasibility: Practical considerations, such as the technical requirements of the performance and the availability of rehearsal time, are taken into account to ensure smooth execution during the festival.
